The ESPR sets a framework
Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 establishes the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation. It enables the European Commission to set ecodesign and DPP requirements for product groups through later measures. The framework is broad, but the required DPP content, access rights and application dates are not identical for every product.
The 2025–2030 ESPR and Energy Labelling Working Plan identifies priorities for future work. A working plan signals where rulemaking is expected; it is not, by itself, a complete product-specific DPP specification.
Watch the sector sequence
The Commission’s DPP information update identifies batteries as an early sector-specific pathway and notes that apparel, iron and steel, and construction products are expected to follow. The products and timing are not interchangeable: batteries are governed by their own regulation, while other groups will have requirements tied to their applicable legislation.
For a company with a mixed portfolio, keep a register of product families, applicable laws, confirmed dates and unresolved questions. Update that register when an official act is adopted, rather than relying on a third-party timeline graphic that may not distinguish a proposal from binding law.
How to keep a reliable roadmap
A practical roadmap names an accountable owner for each product group and records the source behind every milestone. Separate “confirmed,” “expected” and “under review” items. This makes the plan useful to purchasing, engineering, sustainability and legal teams without implying a certainty that the legislation has not yet provided.
In parallel, invest in reusable product-data capabilities: stable identifiers, material and supplier records, evidence management, versioning and clear data ownership. These foundations can support several regulations and customer requests, even as DPP-specific rules evolve.
- Monitor the applicable EU regulation and Commission implementation updates.
- Distinguish framework dates, working-plan priorities and binding product rules.
- Avoid announcing a compliance date until the rule for the relevant product is confirmed.
